I've been staring at the ocean
Spending time away from home
Atlantic winds are blowing cold here
And I know I have to go
And I know I've got to leave here
'Cause my baby's far away
Too many years with miles between us
Have kept the distance anyway
Leaving a cold eastern rain
Headin' for a California day
Leaving a cold eastern rain.
Headin' for a California day
And that rain keeps falling lonely
Calling me to something new
The West Coast smiling on my heart there
What else, baby, can I do?
Leaving a cold eastern rain
Headin' for a California day
Leaving a cold eastern rain.
Headin' for a California day
I know the West coast sun is shining
Gold reflections on the bay
I'll leave this east coast pain behind me
Little girl I just can't stay
Leaving a cold eastern rain
Headin' for a California day
Leaving a cold eastern rain.
Headin' for a California day
Style: soft rock-folksy- ballad?
History: This song began as a simple chord idea. Mike was playing with chords that used the same note on different strings. He found a really sweet "E" form that he liked and threw it together into a pretty common chord idea influenced by songs like "Melissa" and "Wild Fire".
So, Christiansen had this song in rough form when the band was first formed. It was thought that they should add more parts to it, but nothing ever came to be. In fact, they almost scrapped the song altogether.. but Steve was insistent that it could be made it into something. He added alternate chord forms complementing Mike's existing chord progression, added folksy backing vocals, synthesizers, a soaring guitar solo, and ended up with what you hear.
